transition to splicing

i've been installing for 3 years, did 2.5 in catv, and the last 7 months doing dish. i'm pretty sure that dish installs aren't going to pay what i want this year, and someone i once worked with now has a splicing/rebuild contract that will last the winter and offered me the opportunity to come in and learn to splice.........

my question is how steep a learning curve is it to go from installs to splicing (assuming at least average learning ability and work ethic) and what were some of yoiur expriences for those that made the transition (successfully or unsuccessfully)

as usual any responses are appreciated in advance.
