General Liability and Workman's Comp

I'm looking for a few answers... Ive been in cable installation industry for quite a few years now, and started contracting about 2 years ago. The company I'm with now says we have to carry GL and WC, we had a certain time to get it and then the company starts taking it out of your check.... well, i work like a dog 6 days a week and when im off i don't think to research this stuff, so they started taking it out of my check at 6% of my total every week.
This comes out to a lil over 160.00 a week for me...i feel a little screwed.
So what im wanting to know is... whats legal? surely GL and WC does not cost them 640 + a month on one tech.
2nd question is... what are some companies i can check out to carry my own insurance.
I'm more worried about the WC, it seems to be the more expensive and harder item to get.
