employee or sub

My question for everyone is simple. I work for this company that has a contract with the prime were i live. (going to leave the name out sorry). They always tell us to have custom work checks from cust. made out to them. We get half. Their explaination is that they get half because they give us the work. They call us their EMPLOYEES, they are specific about not us not being subs. They do withhold taxes and all that stuff. ok. heres the question, is it legal for me to be an employee and have to buy all my own materials. They dont even give us poles or tri pods. But we still have to buy them, and then split it profit with them, i dont get it. Even wall fishes. Their not in 150 degree attics for for sometimes an hour, why would i split that.
