contractor or employee: where's the line?

Does anyone out there have any idea how much a cable contracting company can ask of its contractors before they should consider them employees? I've been in the business @ 10 yrs and have never heard of some of the requests this current group is asking of us.

Now, of course this list could be a lot longer, but first just the basics:

Our day is started off with @ 12 install jobs. When I finish, they try to ask (lately its more like tell me) that I have to ask permission to leave my work area so I can "HELP" other contractors until everyone is finished.

They do not pay any extra for this.

Does anyone else out there see a problem with this?
