Obviously you do not understand the SCTE or its place in the industry. Yes, there were many manufacturers that attended the Expo, they had to PAY for their booth or floorspace. The manufacturers did not "put on the Expo" as you stated but were participants in the SCTE yearly event. This event is targeted for the "Technician" in the field as well as management, contractors, consultants, installers, service technicians, maintenance technicians, warehouse or whoever is in the industry. There are training programs and exposure to new technology along with networking with other telecommunication companies and employees, contract or not.
Talking about technicians getting paid 3rd world wages...well, are you talking in-house or contract? It seems that many "greedy" primes have the monopoly that pay the contractor taking 50% or more. Don't blame the MSO's...they probably are paying good money to the prime(s). If you are in-house, well, you were the person who agreed to work for whatever wage you get.
Before you call for a "Picket" or "Strike" of a convention that is for the betterment of the industry, I would look at the "union" view you have about a boycott. Not to start anything negative, but, you can thank the "union" for company cutbacks with many MSO's who have had to carry the dead weight of hacks that they can not fire due to "red tape", not just in cable but the auto industry and many others. This has NOTHING to do with the SCTE or its views.
I am not trying to start an argument but rather suggest you do some research before you trash an organization that is out for technical advancement and training. Oh, the SCTE does not require you to pay "dues" to be able to work in the industry at work sites, locations or specific jobs as does the union. Yes, work is bad all over in all industries but to boycott or picket something you don't understand, you might as well picket the local gas station about the prices you pay at the pump.
