Cable and Satellite

Been coming across alot of Satellite and Cable jobs lately. As a Cable installer I don't know much about satellite . Can I get a laymens explanation of how the diplexers work. If satellite needs a send and recieve is one leg of the diplexer a straight leg, do they piggy back? I have spent hours trying to tone out satellite lines only to find a diplexer no where near a receiver, in the attic. Is that common? Just trying to get an idea of how the 2 are fed together as well as how Satellite wiring difers from home run cable wiring... Had a job the other day with 2 dishes and 3 sets of wiring?? what a mess,,who does that??  Thanks in advance.
