Setting Return Path

I am currently setting up one of my systems to provide internet. I don't have a problem with the forward path, but am a little unsure of the return. What I was told to do is take a Sunrise Telecom CM500IP, which acts like a modem, and go to the last LE and start balancing the return path back to the headend. Let me know if you have any better ideas. Also, I have heard goods and bads about high-pass filters. I have a fairly tight plant, but was wanting ideas on if I should use them at every port. Thanks for the input.
