Sumahit you are a bit off base. What you are saying is yet ANOTHER piece of mis-information. But it is something most people think is true. But I must inform you, unions do not determine prevailing wages. See Davis-Bacon Act.
The Wage and Hour Division of the U.S. Department of Labor determines prevailing wage rates to be paid on federally funded or assisted projects. It is the responsibility of the federal agency that funds or financially assists Davis-Bacon covered on projects to ensure that the proper Davis-Bacon wage determination(s) is/are applied to such construction contracts(s).
If the companies you mentioned were required to pay prevailing wages it was probably due to the government in some way funding the project. Also, these companies may use contractors, and if they were required to pay prevailing wages, it isn't the same as our industry. In their case the company can pay the contractor anything they want, as long as the employees of the contractor are receiving the prevailing wage of the job site. You see in other industrys contractors are REALLY contractor and have employees. Not just a guy who paid $500 to get himself incorporated.
Also prevailing wages do not put a cap on what a person is allowed to be paid. It sets a minimum. Big difference.
