Aerial fiber splicing

I was wondering if anyone had aerial experience splicing fiber. This is the first time I've had to splice fiber off of a ladder or hooks. Heres' the problem, getting the welder up there safely. I've been putting it in a 5 gallon bucket with bubble wrap around it in case it falls it would have a little protection. So far I've been lucky and very careful. I'd hate to drop a $10k welder.
To any engineers out there that draw up the prints for fiber, one word,,,UNDERGROUND!!!!! Its safer and faster.
Any guidence is appreciated, thanx, Red(snipper)(usa)
