The best thing to do is get unified in some way so that everyone is united in getting the primes pay out a guaranteed percentage for those qualified subs. Let's put the prices on the table. Asking for a price is not good enough because cost of living is different everywhere and negotiated prices between the MSO and prime may vary due to type of work and what all is included. One thing you can bank on is a guaranteed percentage, which by the way should be at least 70%, and I can GUARANTEE to you that the majority payouts today are around 45%-50%. Primes may disagree that a larger cut is needed to get the job done, however a lot of the money they spend is spent due to mismanagement on thier parts. When they get a contract in hand, it's like " OK subs, go get it done." Not much communication on job progress is made. How many of you have had SERIOUS weekly meetings with everyone working on the project giving progress updates to each other as to work more efficiently with each other. NEVER. Bottom line is the subs are paying for the primes mis management. It costs them more money and with the inefficiency and reliance on other subs to have thier part done before you get there, it costs you, the sub, more money. Can you see where this is headed? The primes are going to have to do more of the work in-house and provide thier own manpower and trucks and fuel and equipment, etc. and really run their own jobs and do thier own work because a sub can not afford to work with low prices combined with inefficiency. You must use force to get what you want my friends, and the power is with the people. And for the primes that are doing things with integrity and efficiency, they shouldn't have a problem with this message at all. As for myself, I am getting out of the business as a sub because of these reasons discussed. I would however like to see a change in the industry for the people doing the majority of the work, the subs. It is not right that you should pay for the contractor's mistakes. There is a strong need for a sub union for the support of pricing as well as legal support on subcontractor contracts. You subs should not even be signing 95% of the contracts you sign before you work. You need protection against theft of your hard earned money and you need a good percentage(the price will come) for what you do. Even though I will no longer be subcontracting in this industry as I am changing careers, I would love to be a proactive part as well as provide leadership in changing the way this business is ran. If nothing else, I will at least feel as though I have done something productive in this chapter of my life. YOU CAN DO WHAT YOU WANT PEOPLE!! Make things happen. Don't let things happen. E-mail me at (-REDACTED-) with your sub contracting name and contact info and we will change the way your business is conducted, nationwide. Remember, the power is with the people. Each company matters.
