Well,
Before the Iraq war our oil boats were not getting much oil...now we have all we want.
Even though it was pretty clear there were no weapons of mass destruction and Sadam had nothing to do with 9/11 Bush the younger moved us in anyway because he knew Sadam was the devil. His daddy told him.
IF Harry Trueman had opened the letter from Ho Chi Minh Vietnam would have been our client nation. They just wanted their country back from the French. Lyndon Johnson was not going to go down in history as a president who was soft on communists or one to loose a war.
Spain took Mexico and Texas from the peasants who had lived there for centuries.If the term Manafest Destiny has meaning for you you will understand how taking Texas made sense.
There is plenty of ego and greed in there. Besides, there are other motives for screwing up. Stupidity explains a lot.
