I don't have much time so I'll be brief.
The Mexican-American war: During peaceful negotiations over purchase of lands the Mexican army attacked Fort Texas on May 3 1846. On May 9 they attacked Brownsville. On May 12 they wiped out a U.S. patrol between the Nueces and Rio Grande rivers. On May 13 1846 the U.S. declared war on Mexico.
The Vietnam war: During the cold war it was considered unexceptable to allow the communist to take over a country. The theory was that if Vietnam fell in communist hands the rest of the region would fall like dominoes.
The Iraq war: Was to keep the country's oil fields from falling into terrorist hands.
I really don't see any greed or ego on our part in any of these.
