I am sorry but I am a Felon for a drug charge when I was 20. It has and will haunt me forever (at least 10 years when i can then write a letter to Governer and hope he picks me out of the thousands of yearly expungement requests) and I accept that. With that being said I also COMPLETELY understand the background checks. I also feel the results should be applied to how it will affect the applicant in "x" industry. I.E. cable...if you came to me and had assaults of any kind and in any kind of close time frame you could bet your "butt" I am going to pass on the risk to my business. I have been yelled at, cussed out, spit hitting me because the guy couldn't stop yelling, etc. and if you have a history of "retaliation" or anything else I am going to think twice. Also lets look at thief of any level. I have seen INSANELY valuable things, from cash to jewels, working in Potomac MD and I wouldn't want to touch a person tempted by "easy money that isn't theirs." Now that being said if it is once and has past enough time to not show it is a pattern than I believe exceptions can be made. AND I am testimonial to 1 time mistakes being forgiven. Since my conviction their were YEARS that I couldn't even get jobs in wharehouses or anything but I sucked it up and eventually I was accepted in this industry. I believe if you present yourself in a responsible, grown way and are UPFRONT (not telling employer on app or being a MAN and telling the guy to his face BEFORE he waists his money & time on your B/G and drug screen is an idiot move and not responsible) with the people I have found things can be overlooked or at least given the chance. Now if you have repeatably committed thefts or violent related offenses in any combination I would run from you. Even recent drug use as we are in front of customers, and working in roadways, and on poles. Bottom line if you have earned yourself a rap sheet with repeat convictions than stop crying, assume the responsibility and go cut grass for a landscaper for a few years until you can show you have your "stuff" together. THE UNION CRYBABIES AND THIS TYPE OF MENTALITY IS WHAT HAS GOTTEN THIS COUNTRY TO THIS POINT. I MEAN YOU THINK BECAUSE YOU JUST GOT OUT OF JAIL OR W/E AND WANT TO DO BETTER YOU EXPECT A JOB SOMEONE SHOULD HIRE YOU. HOW ABOUT THE EMPLOYER SIDE. HE OWNS ALL RISK AND THINGS LIKE HIS WORKMANS COMP SKYROCKETING CUZ YOUR HIGH OR HIS LIABILITY INSURANCE TAKING ON A CLAIM OR YOU WRECKING HIS TRUCK OR YOU AS A CONTRACTOR HURTING HIS REP WITH THE MSO. EVERYONE IS OUT FOR THEMSELVES. SORRY FOR THIS RANT BUT I GET SICK OF IT. PEOPLE NEED TO LEARN PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY AND MAN THE "____" UP. GO BE A LANDSCAPER OR WHATEVER YOU CAN. IF YOU NEED HELP TO GET BY GO TO A CHURCH OR NON PROFIT OR TAKE ADVANTAGE OF OUR SOCIALIST PROGRAMS ON A SHORT TERM BASIS AND IN A FEW YEARS TRY AGAIN. SINCE MY CONVICTION I AM DOING MUCH BETTER BUT MINE WAS A 1 TIME MISTAKE, NOT A TRACK RECORD, AND THE FIRST 3 YEARS I HAD TIME W/O ELECTRICITY AND I DIDN'T THINK I WOULD MAKE IT WEEK TO WEEK BUT I DID. I do agree that it should be limited to the effect on the given industry but remember how your mistakes could ruin/hurt an employer. In my recent hiatus from cable I owned a company doing property preservation for foreclosed properties. We have access and combinations and key codes to THOUSANDS of vacant properties some of which have sub zero appliances and some even have valuable property in them like flat panels etc. If you think I would had hired a thief to work in these homes you have lost your mind. An assault on the other hand, I looked over a guy who had 2 in 3 years with the most recent being within a year of hire because we don't make customer contact in any way shape or form. I also do not believe I would had hired a person with recent drug charges as my auto policy could not afford it nor would they be able to have a DOT medical card to drive the trailers that weighed 25k loaded. There is always two sides...try not to look at it from yours only!
