The FCC requires 0 db at the outlet on all analog channels, the digital CMTS carrier is usually in the middle of the window at 0, if you can get that with multiple splitters it will work but is not a good practice to fall into. A homerun line is ideal, but not necessary to to make it work. The number of ports on a splitter is irrelevant as long as you can make both the TX and RX levels at the modem. The more connectors you have the more possible places to have a problem, corrosion, reflections, ingress or egress. I am sure the system has level specs for an install, they most likely have a buffer built into them to keep the modem in the operational window due to fluctuations in the system.
Never argue with an idiot, they will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience. Winston Churchill
