why do primes or subs get to touch a contractors$$

The hsps I have worked for multiband and skylink seem to already treat the contractor as if he or she is an indepedent why do they mess with subs and primes who cut out 30 to 40 percent of the pay. my opinion is if they payed the individual the money they pay the subs and dealt with them individualy alot of bs could be avoided.
