Re: why do primes or subs get to touch a contracto

As well as liability as was pointed out there are so many processes and related expenses that have to be gone through for each sub such as background checks, drug testing, routing of work on a daily basis, keeping track of techs/subs in the field to make sure they are keeping appt's on time, making sure the techs/subs are properly outfitted, distribution of drop materials, inventory of CPE, just to name a few. And another important factor is book keeping for paying the techs/subs as it's much easier to process 2 or 3 invoices from a few primes than it is to make sense and process invoicing from 100+ techs/subs. It also stops having 100 + techs/subs calling in and asking why was I back charged for this and that as the prime usually keeps their mouths shut these days and simply passes it down the line.  And this I'm talking about a one town or city operation, imagine the headaches for a national MSO. Also face it... if you are installing cable anywhere these days you might operate a business in the manner of a contractor in the legal sense of insurances and such, but the way you're made to carry out work you plain and simple YOU ARE AN EMPLOYEE! and they would be liable as such.

That's why in a nutshell they need the middleman.
