Have you ever been involved in the contract bidding process? Cable MSO's have a budget for Capital and P&L expenses and the bidding process is them handing the contractor a pay sheet of what they are willing to pay for the service (no negotiations on price points). Take it or leave it... there are so many companies that will take the contract if you pass.
As far as contractors mis classifying employment status as a "contractor" rather the an employee was an issue 5 plus years ago. Cable MSO's became aware of there risk concerning contractor resources employment status (span of control) and the NLRB law's and now require in the contract that resources are employee based (I am sure there may be a few small contracts that are still contractor based) .
bottom line is that the move to organize the contractor labor force is a mute point, all contracts have at least a 30 day termination clause by the MSO. If they get wind that their contractors labor force is organizing the contract will be terminated.
Until the contracting companies "unite" on contracting price points...it is what it is and everyone has a choice on who they work for.
I enjoy sharing our thoughts...
