Hey bro. Nice to see your tenacity with what it is that bewilders you. I am sure you will figure it out. Lol I can imagine showing up at her house time after time. I thought you were testing it off the splitter getting bad mer. 
When you resolve the issue if you have time share the fix with us.
Keep in mind that the reflection may not be seen at the location of itself. If you have not tried the tap I would try that. Many times I have came across a bad self term or line term that made the amp location feeding it look grassy, however at the eol itself it was a nice flat sweep. Bad or no termintation is a killer to those upper digital frequencies as well can really play havoc with the modems. It isnt rocket science however I bet a rocket scientist would ask for a ride back to the lab when it comes to troubleshooting some of the issues that happen in cable television. A 4/2 tap has so little isolation, almost an open, could be from the other drop. Good luck.
