The prime also serves the functions of managers, leads, supervisors, coordinators, trainers etc that an MSO would have to hire to manage several subs.
Does the prime want to keep up with individuals, hiring and firing, assuring they keep the necessary insurances, managing individual routes and so on. Absolutely not. It just makes sense to have a prime.
