If you don't have insurance and go to the hospital and not pay your bills, That affects every one else through higher health care costs and higher insurance premiums. That is where we are at right now.
Insurance is just that, INSURANCE. Insurance is peace of mind. It is nice to know that it's there if you need it. Insurance allows a person to see a doctor on a regular basis with usually just a co-pay, instead of the full price of an office visit, instead of waiting until you are so sick that you have to run to the emergency room to get help.
Would you rather pay 6-8 thousand dollars in insurance premiums in a year, or potentially, $35,000 for you or a family member if something happened that required surgery. With out insurance, how would you pay for it? The more people who accesses medical care with out paying for it are the ones who are driving up medical costs for the rest of us.
Is it okay for the insurance companies to deny coverage to you? Is it ok for the insurance companies to take your money for insurance premiums, then deny you coverage when you need it?
I agree that it is not fair to be required to get health insurance or pay a fine. But, if every one is insured, health care costs will come down, as will insurance premiums, because you will not have major unpaid medical expenses being passed along to the rest of us.
