During the Hatian revolution, I beleive they got their freedom through violence. It wasn't violence after they were freed.
Name one country in the 1700's or 1800's that would have a trade agreement, or trade arms, with a country of former slaves. If you're isolated from the world, you have a pretty slim chance of getting anywhere. What good is sugar, if no one will do business with you because of your skin color.
Sometimes I think its easy to ignore what being enslaved REALLY means. One of the major things about slavery, is that the enslaved are prohibited from formal education. So you have country of former slaves, who were isolated from the international community, uneducated, and unarmed. While every man and every country's destiny is ultimately in their own hands, when your major hurdle is the color of your skin, theres really not much one can do. You can't change who you are or where you come from.
Isreal, on the other hand, has always been included in the international community. Isreal has always had the military and financial support of the most powerful country on the planet. This support has played a vital role in Isreal's well being. To say the least....
