The ISP's have one thing locked up tight, that's the fat pipe of data flowing in and out of your home that'll be needed to get all of that streaming media and other services from third party providers. They can focus on one thing, data flow. And data flow is a commodity that the customers and the third party service providers can't operate without. Just like you can't run all your media appliances w/o power, and most people do not produce their own power, some, but very, very few.
The good thing is the more data flowing, the fatter the pipes will have to be to provide the needs, which in turn will see more construction or upgrades of plant.
