There seems to be a lot of illegal labor in the industry particularly in the construction area of cable, ie. underground MDU construction, and other areas. Comcast and other cable companies have federal contracts that stipulate they must have all employees and the employees of contractors go through the verification process, from what I understand. Clearly this is not being done in a lot of cases. This cheap labor supply surely fattens the pockets of some contractors but in my opinion it is detrimental to this country, the economy and the prevailing wages that we, as cable technicians or contractors receive. Just as the unions, in some cases, have been able to set a standard with wages for the employee, cheap foreign labor is driving down the cost of labor and consequently driving down the cost of doing business. This hurts the sub contractor and the wages of the American labor force.
For many this is business as usual, and to those reading this I'm sure it is no suprise. Sadly this type of business hurts America, and most of all those of us who work in the cable field. If this continues more and more jobs are going to be given to this cheap labor force, such as sales, technician work, or even lineman work. The fact that Comcast and other cable providers are turning a blind eye to this is not only disheartening, but it is illegal.
