You guys have lost you minds to even think a union will help our industry. Don't get me wrong, unions had their place long ago, but with the modern employment laws that exist today there is no place for a union. In case some of you forgot our pricing is based on what we agree upon with the MSO. If you are a contractor and your employees unionize; how long do you think it will be before you will receive your 30 day termination notice from the MSO? Then guess what; along comes another contractor and picks up where you left off.
The problem with this industry can be related to the basic laws of supply and demand. Several years back the MSO's started awarding contracts to most any Tom, Dick, or Harry (who were mostly glorified installers) that knew someone within the MSO and somehow managed to pass their low voltage test. These "mom and pops" have no overhead, no trucks to pay for, no payroll except for themselves, and most likely could not get bonded if their life depended on it. They will work for nickels on the dollar and will agree to most any verbiage that is in their contract. Then when the MSO goes long with the payment schedule they figure out there is more to being a contractor and close their garage door and show up on your door steps. Then they piss and moan about how bad this business has become and wonder why it becomes harder and harder to get by. The waters of the modern day contract world are so muddy from all so called "Contractors" it is a wonder any of us can make it. One thing is certain, this recession we are in will separate the true contract companies from the rest.
