Re: Note to all cable guy wanna be's

Hey Doug. Although CATV and Telco are very similar technologies, they are 2 TOTALLY different businesses for installers. Instead of cost of living increases each year, you get pay cuts. With more complex technologys like digital, voip, etc... you still get pay cuts. Thats just the way it is here. CATV plays a very big factor on why wages in low-voltage are hitting the tank. CATV workers KILL the industry average. Look at what telco work pays for a DSL install from the NID to the PC, and compare it to a cable HSI install from the pole to the PC. Its sad, very sad.

Some how doing 2k woth of work for 1200 is fine. The #1 rationale is, "its better than working at Walmart". Thats just the way it is. Very backwards, but many people love it. No one is really interested in keeping the rates here in line with the rest of the telecom industry. Walmart is the benchmark here, not their fellow tradesmen in the same industry.

The average CATV guy is the telcoms world worst nitemare. They will perform the same work cheaper. They require no benefits, no nothing. Many will/are paying the companies to work. As dangerous as the job is,many will waive WC instead of demanding more pay to cover expenses. They really bring down standards in the telecom world, but have no problem with it. Its actually a source of pride for many. They feel people who require many of the things I listed are lazy cry babies.
