The point is that there should be some sort of education or training required to be in this industry as a contractor. They should not allow anyone who wants to do the work to do it. There should be guidelines like apprenticeship first, then on your own once you have passed some sort of test.
It should be regulated like other utility companies. You should have to at least take some tests (hands on and written). In California, they did this for electrical and fire / life safety and it made the pay for both professions increase.
It would weed out the hacks. You guys are always blaming the way things are on hacks and low prices. If we regulated our profession we could command more pay because we would be legally considered professionals.
Why don't you understand that I am not putting you down? I am just sharing an idea on how to improve the way things are. Should I be insulted when you say we should join a union?
