The difference is that you only had 1 kind of relationship with the company. The terms of your relationship never changed so the company had no right or reason to split your payments.
The only time you will probably be in a situation where you recieve a 1099 and a W2 is if youre working for the type of companies specsplicer described. Temp agencys, headhunters, or a large contractor. They are employers that usually have several different projects they can place you on which means its a chance that you could be a sub on 1 project and an employee on another.
