what's a criminal to do?

as a follow up to a recent post and just a little sick of the constant ups and downs of contracting i've been looking around at some of the bigger construction companies and mso's around and even for ug construction they are wanting background checks. i'm not sure if they are scared you might take the heavy equipment down to the pawn shop or what, but is there a place in this industry for a hardworking fast learner with a conviction on his record? i know a plant manager that wants me, but he's never had reason to look at the background, my work was enough as a contractor. my fear would be that my background would keep me from even working in the system as a contractor. who else has had to deal with this, and is the background thing as serious as it feels from the outside. of course i realize that i can't expect a lot of public responses to this question, but i'd appreciate whatever responses i can get.
