thank you all for your advice, although i have to admit i didn't go to a doctor, i tried last week, but they were closed on columbus day and with the inevitable fall slowdown close at hand i was scared about missing any more work! but after i realized that the headaches seemed to start in my back this is what i did after the last episode........
first i had my wife talk to her doctor/chiropractor (he actually is an MD as well) and they of course suggested coming in to see them. but also suggested that it sounded like muscle tension which had prgrossed out of control.......so i took the following steps
!. during the last major headache i had my wife massage my back for a few minutes (she said it felt like i had golf balls between my shoulder blades) man it hurt.
2. found every way i could manage to stretch my back (long and slow stretches like they taught us in football practice)
3. a long HOT soak in the tub, followed by more stretching and rubbing my own upper back with some pressure massage thingy i borrowed from my sister (which actually forced me to stretch while i massaged)
4. the next day my back was just plain sore which made me think i'd be getting headaches soon, so i took two migraine relief excedrins IN THE MORNING before the headaches started. i didn't drink any cokes or tea for the next few days and instead drank propel, gatorade and water only.
5. i did the massage, stretch, soak, repeat thing for the next few days and went straight to bed when i got home from work. i also took the migraine relief excedrin each morning as my back stayed SORE for a few more days.
i'm happy to report that the headaches didn't return and the back pain hasn't come back in more than 7 days. it seems to have been some sort of tension thing coming from the muscles in my back. i have decided that it might be time to pay more attention to what's going on with me day to day, and have decided that a few minutes with light dumbells each night might go along way to keeping the pain away, as i have read a lot about the benefits of stretching and contracting keeping the muscles from building up their own form of chemical warfare. just for good measure i'm shopping for a new mattress, (mine is 15 years old) and switched to a better pair of boots. i'm sure this is all just commonsense to most of you, but i'd never really thought about it until it scared the HELL out of me.
i appreciate your suggestions and concern. thought you might want to know what seems to be working for me.
what seems to have worked.........
