The main reason why nothing much was done for them was because they were poor. If memory served correctly the documentary involved quite a few white people that were telling their story as well. Spike Lee did not make it a majority black show NO happens to be predominantly black. Maybe some of the former residents were not self supporting citizens but all of them were not on welfare. A lot of people associate black with welfare when the US government states that there are more white people on welfare than any other race. Contrary to belief the majority of black people are working self sufficient people. Not everyone in the ghetto is on welfare or selling drugs. These still have families who have lived their since the beginning raised their kids there and now are retired there. Majority of the people who were raised in these areas never go back or reinvest in their neighborhood. When this happens their parents businesses shuts down and sometimes their parents die or move away. By the consistent decline in business reduces the property value. People sell their property and leave which makes an abundance of cheap run down rentals and vacant lots. Poor people from all over the country move to these neighborhoods. The hard working ones usually leave and find better homes elswhere while some of the seriously poor stay. They usually have no marketable skills so some apply for government aid. When another area or town starts to go under they move to the big cities to try to make it. Only the desperate and the lazy apply for welfare. Most of us frown on anyone who is on welfare or Section 8. Most black men will not date or have any relations with a woman who is on welfare so the only find the crappy ones who will not help them get out of their situation. If you were to do a census on the inner cities you will find a lot of them are not elgible for welfare. Most of you rely on the press for your information which is usually amped up for better ratings. Yes a few black people cry racism where there is none. They are usually ridiculed by most of us. However a large number of people in America think that there is no racism against black people in America anymore. The people who say that are never black. Until you are black in America I would hold off on that statement.
