Suma, the union is a group of employes, if anything is done they would do it for themselves, as a group with a common goal. The union is just the legal means to make that goup a possibility. Companies love to negotiate with individuals, it's easier to shoot them down one at a time than it is in a group. There is strength in numbers.
These days the inhouse techs are getting screwed, and the screwing is quickly passing over to the contractors as well. If you are able to negotiate a good contract that is good for you, but more and more companies are telling the people what the rates WILL be and not budging.
Another thing, just look at all the non-paying companies that popped up in the past year. And the ones who made up excuses not to pay. Sure there are bad techs who regularly get backcharged for failed QC's and there are companies who fail jobs that were perfect just so they have an excuse not to pay the tech for a month's worth of installs. Just because a person comes to this forum and posts in favor of a union does not mean they are the type who is regularly backcharged.
If an individual can negotiate a good deal for themselves while the company is forcing a pay cut or major change on it's emplyes, then that is great, but if you go to your boss and all he/she say's, "that's the way is is, if you don't like it there is the door", organizing might be a better option than looking for a new job, especially if you want to stay in the cable or satellite field and don't want to have to relocate to find new work.
Unions aren't for everyone, and they may not be the answer for what is ailing this business, but pay cuts, COV's, low hourly pay rates and Micky D's rejects aren't the answer either, they are only breeding more hacks and crating a pretty dim outlook for the industry as a whole.
