What is the Employee Free Choice Act? I think I have heard it mentioned before but really don't know what it is.
It's a little hard to swallow the argument that the techs might not have voted their conscience. Unions have a long history of intimidation themselves (not necessarily here). In some cases voters who are in favor of the union intimidate the voters who are not in favor with the union in an attempt to insure that the union gets voted in (often with violence or the threat of it). It happens both ways.
The "fact" is the vote was very very close. Had 3 of the union votes gone the other way it would have been a different story.
The only reason I mention that is to point out with all the discussion about how horrible Mastec has treated its employees, you would have thought it would have been an overwhelming victory. It just tells me that if changes do need to be made, only about half of the techs feel like unionizations is the way to get the changes made.
