I also have another friend whom I have known for 24 years. He was arrested and plead guilty to possession of child porn about 10 or 11 years ago. The office he worked in was a real Peyton Place. He told me about a couple of his co-workers who would stab others in the back to get to the top. My friend went to work and did his job and tried to get along with everyone. He was good at his job and was inline to one day become the boss. The backstabbers didn't like that and were constantly throwing obsticles in his way. He also had some problems at home (he was married to the anti-Christ). His wife had been having an affair (or affairs) since about 2-3 months after their wedding. He, not one to stray, turned to occassionally looking at porn on the internet. He was under a lot of stress, at home and at work, going on the internet was his escape from the problems. All this, an unhealthy diet, smoking and depression led to him having a heart attack. While he was in the hospital recovering one of his co-workers got into a computer he had used and found some pictures of underaged girls downloaded from the internet. The person who found the pictures was one of the people who had tried causing problems for him at work (he later, after my friend plead guilty, admited to taking the computer's removable hard drive home with him prior to calling the police, so it is possible he put the pictures on there himself). My friend say's he was pressured into pleading guilty by his then soon to be ex and his court appointed lawyer (a claim which I believe having known him as long as I have, having met the anti-Christ herself and after hearing things about his lawyer's reputation for pleading out cases rather than trying them). My friend went to prison (federal, as the crime occured in a civilian office on a military base) for a little over a year. Considering everything I know about him and the case I have no doubts that he was not guilty of the crime.
The only thing a potential employer would see in a background check is his conviction and none of the information I have just given you and nothing as to his true character. Is that being fair to him?
If my other friend were still alive and his background run it would show his conviction for the burglaries he committed but there would be nothing about the way he turned his life around nor his countless hours of community service.
Is it fair to judge either of these people on their background checks alone?
Both these people served their time. Is it fair to sentence them to a life of low paying meaningless jobs just because they made a mistake at some point in their lives? I could understand if they had been convicted of rape or murder or had a history of other violent crimes
