Ok you cleared it up, I think.
It seems that you dont mind having rules or guidelines to follow, you just want the flexibility to, at time ignore, them when you see fit. Hey , we all do. In a perfect world this would be the norm. But history has shown us that its better for everyone to always follow the guidelines. If this is done, then theres no reason for anyone to cry racisim, sexsism, or favortism. I really feel what you are saying, but theres human error I think you have to consider. Do you really think everybody is capable of having that flexibity without in some way abusing it. I for on dont think so. There going to be some asshole who shows some sort of favortism.
Its funny you take this position. Becasue as you may already know, there are many managers who perfer to manage under a union contract for the exact same reasons you dont. They like the fact that everything is spelled out for everyone to see. Theres little need bickering because most things are settled by reffering to the contract. I have heard many say it makes their job easier.
