Internet Speeds

I'm interested in the speed issues with basic catv internet connections,i.e. one forward channel and one return channel. What I'm looking for is its limitations and what causes speeds to drop? I know noise is a big factor but what levels of noise is acceptable? What are some of the off the wall or odd causes of noise? I could go on and on,how much bandwidth can a forward channel throughput and is it divided by the number modems online equally? Somebody shed some light on this subject for those of us who have to learn this stuff as go, please!!!!
