If unions suck, explain this. Why is it that turn-over rate in non-union employees is much higher than their union counter parts. Why are contractors who use union workers more likely to get government contracts due to their well documented ability to get projects done on time, and with little on the job injuries.
Unions aren't perfect, but who is. But which is better for the trade. Having companies with high turnover rates, meaning they will probably fill positions with the fist guy to walk through the door. Or having companies that through the relationship with their employees and their union create a workplace that promotes training, safety, and other workplace concerns, and pays wages that are bargained for and not just set by 1 side, thus will more likely give you a better trained and seasoned workforce. Sure companies can, and some do, achieve this without from unions but we all know that is a very small number. Look at our predominately non union industry. Cable and satellite have climbed steadily since their conceptions, but the wages and rates paid to the workers in the industry have fallen steadily. While are union counter parts (ie, telephone) has seen competition grow and subscribers lost to cell phones, voip and other technology, but have been able to maintain good wages and benefits.
Every union employee will not be a model employee, every non-union employee will not be bad employee but which situation has the greater possibility of being a win-win-win situation for the company, its employees and their families, and the customer.
