I have been in CATV for 16 years and found unions do nothing but shield incompetent workers and provide a good salary base for themselves. I have had dealing with the CWA and voted them right out the door when I worked for Suburban Cable TV.
I have yet to find a cable MSO that abuses workers. Comcast is a company that demands hard work from it's employees but pays very well in return.
I would leave a company before I would work for a union.
