I can't disagree with you more; of course i'm only basing it on my experience in my union; we don't allow slackers, everyone does their fair share of work given to them by the company.
Consider this; the company hires the employees, not the union; if there were slackers in your company, don't blame the union. They have a legal obligation to represent them if the company moves for their discharge; otherwise to fail to do such leaves the union open to being sued. If the company had a better screening process, and the managers did their jobs properly, then many of these issues would not be at hand. And if the employee is truly a bad employee, no union is going to be able to save their job.
