You are 100% correct that he should stick with a brand that specializes in locators. Butttt ... he is doing drops which means all lines should already be marked. I think mostly he is going to be using it to verify accuracy of the existing marks and finding depth for his d/w bores. Yes a 810 will pick up every thing in the ground but if you know the basics on locating you can tell when you are on the utility you are hooked too or on something else. You should always start locating highest freq lines first.. cable, telephone, gas, then power. Power will always be your slowest signal and the lowest readings , if your numbers jump up you know you are on something else. That is why you rule out highest freq. utility to lowest. I am glad you brought up the gas lines, unfortunely the gas crews don't check there connection going both ways on the main line after install , all gas lines being installed now are plastic with tracer wire, if the wire is not clamped on to the main tracer wire correctly, (some cut the main tracer and then clamp all three ends, which sometimes cause only one side of main line tracer to actually touch the service tracer) and you will not pull a signal on the main or you may pull it only going one way, it has absolutely nothing to do with the pressure on the line unless you are refering to a pipehorn which is used for plastic lines that have a broken tracer or plastic water lines.
