Thanks for your comment on my abilities. I only took two hits, one on a 25 pair phone cable and one on a .500 feeder in a year and a half - Knock on wood. As far as the gas line thing it has nothing to do with pressure, its the steel line that feeds the area or town or whatever, your signal will turn on the tracer wire towards that steel line whether its 2 blocks or 2 miles away.
Didn't know about a order to locating as you stated, if I was in question I always went for the phone first then gas just my preference I guess. I do know that you get a better reading on secondary power than primary though. Anybody know why???
You got me on the pipehorn thing though, only way i know for a plastic line with no tracer is to witch it, no gaurantees though.
