It has to be able to "see" satellites to fix your position. Clouds may degrade the accuracy somewhat, but normally not enough to worry about. A very thick tree covering can make it loose it's fix. It wont work inside a building at all, unless it's got some sort of line of sight to a satellite. It might work somewhat near a window. It has to have at least 3 sats to get a good fix. I have an antenna for mine on my truck, it helps alot.
Mine is a garmin, can track from 12 sats at a time. The more sats it can use, the more accuate it will be.
