hey there, Just an opinion, but i dont feel that splice 'broke' after it was put in the silicone..unless, it broke while it was put in their or while it hardened... I dont ever like to leave a splice unprotected, and like you, use the splice protectors.. However, in the 'old' days, (all of what, 5 years ago?)....thats they way they did it!
There doesnt seem to be much fiber splicing going on at the moment, so keep climbing them mountains!
