Could use a little clarification there...
What is it that goes from +0.01 to -17? Do you look at the return spectrum with an analyzer during these events? Do modems show drastic changes in transmit or receive levels? SNR #s changing? Is optical power at the reciever dropping?
Alot can be happening here.
There is a known issue with ADC (C-COR) nodes and their reverse transmitters crapping out. They'll elevate the noise floor by 20-25 dB first, then just give up all together.
