Wanted to add something though. When looking at "CPD" in the return, the effect your describing can be seen as a relatively constant distortion.
"True" CPD will fluctuate in amplitude over short periods of time, sometimes dissappearing altogether, whereas the "diplex failure" CPD will be more steady in amplitude.
Something to be aware of when faced with this kind of issue...
