Good to know that someone else believes that we can make a difference in this society. I agree with Jim and his views of how the cable industry can have a impact on the world as we know it. Everyone has got to start doing their part in identifing the bad apples. We have got to come together at some point and initiate a program where a Dawg can plead his case and have some justice brought about. This would, I believe get rid of some of the RIFF RAFF that plagues the industry. Somebody mentioned Pre-paid Lawyers. I'm not too sure what that is all about, but maybe it a thought.
Right now I am in a "scuttle" with my last employer over a measely $370.00!! I wasn't sure why he didn't want to pay.
I have worked for the guy around 5 yrs off and on. Never had a problem with anything. I even ran a major Project for him and made him Plenty of money. Now all the sudden he's gonna go
broke over $370.00. I ended up going to the labor board and filing a claim. Also I have considered the Contractors Board as well. Not to sure on that one. Don't want to ruin the guy but principles and scruples are at stake. Also it isn't productions pay it's vacation pay. But that is how I decided to go about it. You guys should know that every claim made to
the Contractors Board is placed on the license of the contractor and that is public information. Usually when a MSO checks out the contractor, they will look to see if they have any outstanding claims and such.
Maybe we could start a Small Investment company that we all pay into and then could cover ourselves that way??

What I mean by this, is when you go into a project, whether you are a sub, or an employee for a sub, cover yourself with a kind of "Contract". For example (we'll use joe blow, cuz you're all familiar with him!), Joe Blow gets a contract in St. Louis doing MDU's - Joe is a prime. Joe hires a sub, say Goofycom, and you go to work for them. Now, before you even think about doing your first fitting, you dawgs take a look at your application for employment. Does it mention ANYTHING about payment for services rendered, how you will be paid, when you will be paid, how often, by who? If not, then you need to go to your employer (with a good attitude) and request a simple "contract-like" document stating your pay arrangements. Here's the tricky part. You dawgs have to see to it that the "contract-like" document states specifically that you will be paid all fees due, barring any legitimate errors on your part. Now, once you've received this document, take it to a notary public to have it notarized. With these two simple steps, you have a document that will hold up in any court of law. However, this is where good work, as well as paperwork on the job is essential. Should, for some reason, an employer decide not to pay you due to sloppy work, it's up to you to either own up to it, or prove that your work is as magnificent as it can be.
