As to risking a suckout by cutting the pin even with the screw, that should be okay as long as the screw contacts the cable well on both sides. The real risk in suckouts is in the connection between the cable and the fitting. Cold temperatures shorten any metal wire only a tiny percentage of it's length, not enough to cause a suckout on a pin that is only an inch or two long.
But where the cold can act on a long length of cable, shortening it a tiny percentage might mean a total shortening of a half inch or more. That's why loops are so important. Take it from an ex splicer from the north.
