Its all a money thing. Think about it...if you have been doing this for more than 12 to 15 yrs. (25 yrs here)you would have seen the transition of our line crews take place.
The problem started when splicers started making more than Linemen, (go figure) line work is the HARDEST and most time consuming and really should be compensated as such. Then Fiber splicers came along, and they make more than coax splicers, then sweepers made more than splicers, and thats easier work. And all these jobs doesnt take a rocket scientist. But the Line crews still only get paid about the same. Their pay has not increased much over the years. And none of the splicers would have jobs if there were not linemen and Line crews. But you go do one spanners of coax all day and bring home 350 bucks to split with the crew and see how long it takes to say "I only wanna do fiber" So a few smarter line foremen decided they only wanted to do what pays the most....and got really good at it, a good fiber crew can string 10000 ft a day, if they dont have to put up a span of coax here and there, and fix an anchor, and do a resag or de/re ....it all has to do with production of a particular crew. Been there and done all that. quit whinin and deal with it. just my 2 cents. nc
