That is exactly what I meant by "Must not have a very well written contract if that is the case.". I choose not to sign a contract that is not in my best interest.  Additionally, signing contracts without reading them is one of the stupidest thing any business can do.  If you sign a contract with bad terms, that means you agree to the terms.  Therefore, you have no one to blame anyone but yourself.  Alternatively, you can ask to have the contract terms changed in your favor.  I have successfully employed that option many times.  More importantly I have also walked away from jobs that had poorly written contracts that I would not sign.
