It doesn't mater if you are the sub or the prime.  The formula for making money is the same; your payment received minus ALL your costs must equal your profit margin.  If it does not, then you are losing money.  i.e. If your costs are $101 per install then you would be loosing money at the average price of $100.    If you are doing the actual work, it doesn't mater if you are the sub or the prime. You will encounter all the costs I mentioned in the previous post above.
