Anybody with a money can buy equipment.  To be a contractor you need more than just equipment and be good at your craft.  The most important thing you need is contacts.  Specifically, contacts that you have a relationship with.  Without relationships, you will have an up hill battle to get the kind of work you want.   You need to meet with known contacts, cold call, go to conventions, SCTE meetings, vendor days.  You have to be a salesman to get jobs.  They very rarely just show up to unknown contractors with under 5 years experience.  And my final advise to you, what ever you do, do NOT lower your price just to get a job!
